Smell is probably the strongest of your senses. It stops us from eating bad food and alerts us to the presence of things like gas. It reminds us of past experiences, many times one that happened years ago. Scent marketing is a way to use these associations to gain customers. Scent systems can project a scent that influences a purchase decision or remind us of a pleasant experience such as a beach or meadow. This makes us feel comfortable. This method of Scent marketing will make a consumer feel “at home” and therefore stay longer in the store and buy more. Industries and businesses are using scent machines or scent systems more and more to achieve this.
Scent machines are machines that you can put a scent cartridge in that has a unique fragrance embedded in it. They are readily available and easy to replace when they run out. Many scent machines have up to 1,000 different scents available. Scent systems work the same way. They are machines that emit a smell. For example, a candy store will have one that smells like chocolate to entice people into the store.
These types of Scent marketing are growing in popularity worldwide. After all, we all love the smell of things like chocolate, fresh baked cookies, or evergreens. Why souldn’t this “weakness” be used in marketing?
