In today’s digital world, files are used to store everything from photographs to business records; the key component to storing this information is a computer’s hard drive.

A hard drive failure can erase important files from a computer system and using a file reclamation service can easily cost thousands of dollars. The best way to insure that important files will be safe in the event of a computer meltdown, it is imperative to backup files stored on a hard drive.

There are many ways to backup files, two of the most popular are using backup software or using an online backup service. File backup software will automatically transfer important data to a storage device outside of the computer’s hard drive; CD’s, DVD’s, and USB thumb drives are all popular external storage devices used to hold backup files.

Creating an online backup for files has one distinct advantage over storing backup files on an external storage device, files stored online are outside of the area the computer storing the original files are stored. If a catastrophic event were to occur, a house fire for example, files stored on external storage devices could also be lost in the catastrophic event, whereas using an online backup keeps files in an entirely separate location from the original files.

It pays to create multiple copies of files and use both backup software and an online backup to ensure that no matter what circumstances arise, important files will always remained safe.
